Easy Redirects is the JoomlaX redirect and 404 manager for Joomla 4, 5, and 6. Old URLs land somewhere useful: rules, a clean 404 log, alias auto-redirect, and migration import.

Think of it as three pieces that work together:

• Component (Easy Redirects): Dashboard, Rules, 404 Log, URL Tester, Import, Configuration.
• System plugin: matches requests and captures 404s on the public site.
• Content plugin: creates redirects when article, category, or menu aliases change.

Before you install

• Joomla: 4.x, 5.x, or 6.x
• PHP: 8.1 or newer
• Database: MySQL or MariaDB
• Access: Super User (or administrator) to install extensions

Not required

• jQuery
• SEF rewriting replacements
• Template overrides for basic redirects

Student tip

The package installs the component and both plugins in one step. Keep System - Easy Redirects enabled or public redirects will not run.

Step 1: Download

File name: EasyRedirects_UNZIP.zip (from your purchase email or Downloads).

Step 2: Unzip on your computer

1. Extract EasyRedirects_UNZIP.zip.
2. Inside you should see:
   • pkg_easyredirects_1.0.3.zip (install this one)
   • ReadMe.txt

Step 3: Install in Joomla

1. Log in to the Joomla administrator.
2. Go to System > Install > Extensions.
3. Upload pkg_easyredirects_1.0.3.zip and wait for success.
4. Open Components > Easy Redirects.
5. Clear cache: System > Maintenance > Clear Cache.

What the package installs

• com_easyredirects: admin UI
• plg_system_easyredirects: System - Easy Redirects
• plg_content_easyredirects: Content - Easy Redirects

Updates

Install a newer pkg_easyredirects zip the same way. Settings and rules stay safe on upgrade. Plugin enabled state is not force-changed on update.

1. Confirm System - Easy Redirects and Content - Easy Redirects are Enabled under System > Plugins.
2. Open Components > Easy Redirects and check the Dashboard.
3. If the Dashboard shows core System - Redirect is still enabled, plan to import its rules and disable it so only one manager runs.
4. Create a Published exact rule (or open 404 Log and use Fix).
5. Clear cache, open the old URL on the front end, and confirm a 301/302.
6. Optional: open URL Tester and paste the same path for a dry-run.

Student tip: start with one exact rule. Add starts-with or regex after that works.

Component (Components > Easy Redirects)

• Where you manage rules, the 404 log, import, URL Tester, and Configuration
• Does not redirect visitors by itself

System plugin

• Matches published rules on each public request
• Logs 404s and can render branded 404 mode
• Should stay at ordering -10 (before Page Cache)

Content plugin

• Watches article, category, and menu alias changes
• Creates or updates redirect rules for editors

Simple rule: build behaviour in the component; keep both plugins Enabled for full product behaviour.

• Quick counts for rules and recent 404 activity
• Shortcuts to Rules, 404 Log, URL Tester, Import, and Configuration
• Banner when core System - Redirect is still enabled

Use the Dashboard as your home screen after install and after migrations.

Open Components > Easy Redirects > Rules.

List tools

• New, publish/unpublish, duplicate, delete
• Flatten chains: collapse A→B→C into direct hops
• Search and filters for match type and status

When you edit a rule

• Source: the old path or pattern
• Match type: exact, starts-with, wildcard, or regex
• Target: path, full URL, or tokens such as article:ID
• Status code: 301 by default for permanent moves
• Optional query, domain, and language filters

Student tip: starts-with /blog will not steal /blogger; boundaries are intentional.

Open Components > Easy Redirects > 404 Log.

• Grouped paths with hit counts and last seen
• Referrer context when available
• Fix: opens a new rule prefilled from the miss, with suggestion chips when aliases are close
• Ignore paths or extensions that are only bot noise

Clear or ignore junk regularly so the list stays actionable.

Open Components > Easy Redirects > URL Tester.

1. Paste a path such as /old-page or a full URL.
2. Click Test.
3. Read which published rule would win (or that nothing matches).

Use this before a migration cutover or after importing a large CSV.

Open Components > Easy Redirects > Import.

• CSV: dry-run first, then import
• Core Redirect: pull rules from Joomla com_redirect
• Export: CSV for backup or another site
• Apache: optional .htaccess write (Super User only)

After a successful core import, disable System - Redirect so two managers do not fight.

Open Components > Easy Redirects > Configuration (in-component settings, not only Global Configuration).

• URL normalization options
• 404 page mode: Template or Easy Redirects
• Auto-redirect toggles for the content plugin
• Ignore lists and related operational settings

Save, then clear cache after changing 404 mode or matching options.

• Redirect never fires

  • Is System - Easy Redirects Enabled? Is the rule Published? Clear cache. Confirm plugin ordering is -10 if Page Cache is on.

• Both managers seem active

  • Disable core System - Redirect after importing its rules.

• Language rule never matches

  • Language-scoped rules wait until the request language is known. Test with URL Tester and check the language filter on the rule.

• Alias rename did nothing

  • Confirm Content - Easy Redirects is Enabled and auto-redirect options are on in Configuration.

• Regex refused on save

  • The ReDoS guard blocks risky patterns. Simplify the expression or use starts-with / wildcard instead.
