Get Started

System - Login Popup lets people log in or log out in a small window on top of your page — they don’t get sent to a separate login screen.

Visitors use your “Login” link; members use your “Logout” link. Everything uses Joomla’s normal, secure login — the plugin only changes how it looks on the page.

You can:

• Match colours to your brand from the plugin options
• Choose where the “Register” line appears (above or below the form)
• Optionally open the popup when someone opens a special link (see URL hash)
• Close the window by clicking outside, the ×, or the Escape key
• Set optional redirects and a friendly “Hi name” on logout

Works on Joomla 4, 5, and 6. Maintained by Joomlax.

Get the file

Download the zip from your purchase email or your account Downloads area.

Install

In the administrator, go to System > Install > Extensions, upload the zip, and wait for the success message.

Turn it on

Go to System > Plugins, search for Login Popup, open it, set Status to Enabled, and save.

What you need

• Joomla 4, 5, or 6
• A normal Joomla site with user login enabled

What opens the popup?

Your Link selector tells the plugin which links on the page should open the window. The default matches common menu links that point to #login and #logout.

If your menu uses those link types, you can usually leave this setting as it is. If your designer used different links, ask them for the correct value or contact support — you don’t need to understand the technical format yourself.

Who sees what?

• Guests (not logged in) see the login form.
• Logged-in users see the logout form.

Use a “Login” style link for visitors and a “Logout” style link for members so the right window appears.

Vertical offset

Moves the popup slightly up or down on the screen if you want it a bit higher or lower (value in pixels).

Secure form (HTTPS)

If your site uses HTTPS, turn this on so the form is sent securely when possible.

After login or logout

• Login redirect and Logout redirect: pick a menu page to send people to after they sign in or out. Leave empty to stay on the current page.

Logout greeting

• Show greeting: shows a short “Hi …” line above the logout button.
• Greeting name: use their full name (from their profile) or their username.

Remember me

The “Remember me” box only appears if Joomla’s System - Remember Me plugin is enabled.

Extra login field

If your site uses two-step login, the extra code field may appear — same as on the normal Joomla login page.

Open the Appearance tab in the plugin. Each option has a short explanation below the label — use the colour pickers and numbers to tune the look.

Registration link position

Choose whether the “Don’t have an account? Register” line appears above the login form or below it (default: below).

Backdrop (overlay)

• Overlay colour: the dark tint behind the popup.
• Overlay opacity: how strong that tint is — from almost clear (0) to solid (100).

Popup box

• Background: colour of the popup panel.
• Body text: colour of normal text (for example the intro line).
• Title and greeting: colour for the “Login” title and the logout greeting line.
• Shadow (colour) and Shadow opacity: soft shadow around the box — lower opacity means a lighter shadow.
• Corner radius: how rounded the corners are (in pixels). Zero is square; higher numbers are more rounded.
• Width: how wide the popup is on large screens (in pixels). On small phones it still grows to fit the screen.

Close (×) button

• Icon colour: colour of the × when you’re not hovering.
• Icon colour (hover): colour when the mouse is over the ×.

Form fields

• Field background, Field text, Field border: the username, password, and other boxes.
• Field border (focus): border colour when someone clicks inside a field.

Primary button (Login / Logout)

• Button background and Button text: the main green (or your colour) button.
• Button background (hover): button colour when the mouse is over it.

Links

• Link colour and Link colour (hover): text links such as “Forgot password?” and “Register”.

Tip: Change a few colours at a time, save, and refresh your site to see the result. If something looks odd, your template may add its own styles — our support team can help.

Open the popup from a full link

Sometimes you want a page to open with the login window already visible — for example from an email or an advert.

Turn Open from URL hash to Yes, then set which “ending” on the address line should trigger the popup.

• Hash for login popup (guests): usually something like #login. You can list several, separated by commas.
• Hash for logout popup (logged in): usually #logout.

You can type login or #login — the plugin fixes the format. The ending must match what you use in your menus so behaviour stays consistent.

If someone changes the address while staying on the same page, the popup can open when the ending matches — useful for advanced setups.

Same login as Joomla

Usernames and passwords are checked by Joomla in the usual way. The popup is only a different layout — not a different login system.

Tokens

Forms include Joomla’s security token so submissions are protected the same as on your default login page.

Colours you choose

Only safe colour values from the settings are used for styling — so your choices stay under your control.

• Nothing happens when I click Login.

  • Make sure the plugin is Enabled and you are viewing the public website, not the administrator area.
  • Check that your menu link matches what the plugin expects (often a #login style link). If unsure, contact support with a link to your page.

• I see the wrong screen (login instead of logout or the other way round).

  • Guests always see login; logged-in users see logout. Use the right menu item for people who are signed in vs not signed in.

• Does it work with friendly (SEF) URLs?

  • Yes. The special #login / #logout part works together with your normal page addresses.

• Can I change how it looks?

  • Yes — use the Appearance tab for colours and size. Your template may still add some of its own styling.

• Which Joomla versions are supported?

  • Joomla 4, 5, and 6. See the product page for the latest information.

Popup never opens

• Confirm the plugin is Enabled.
• Test on the live site (frontend), not only in the admin.
• Clear Joomla’s cache (System > Clear Cache) and try again.
• Try another browser or a private window in case an old page is cached.

Auto-open from a link doesn’t work

• Turn Open from URL hash on.
• Make sure the end of the address exactly matches what you configured (including capital letters if any).
• Guests and logged-in users use different lists — set both appropriately.

Colours look wrong

• Re-check the Appearance settings and save.
• Some templates use very strong styles; if colours still fight each other, ask support for help.

Upgrading from an older Login Popup

• Install the new package over the old one; settings are upgraded when possible.
• If you had very old files in the media folder from a previous version, your host can remove unused copies to save space — not required for the plugin to work.
