Easy Meta is a Joomla plugin. It tells Facebook, X, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Google what title, text, and picture to show when someone shares your page.

You do not edit the template. You install one plugin, pick a picture, and save.

What it does

• Writes Open Graph and X Card tags
• Adds a clean canonical link
• Lets you change the share title on each article (Meta tab)
• Can make a 1200 by 630 picture for shares
• Can remove extra tags from the template so you only have one set

What it is not

• It is not share buttons. That is Easy Share.
• It does not change the big title at the top of the page.

You need

• Joomla 4, 5, or 6
• PHP 8.1 or newer
• A Super User login (so you can install plugins)
• GD on PHP if you want Easy Meta to crop pictures to 1200 by 630

You do not need

• jQuery
• An extra component
• Template overrides

Step 1: Get the file

1. Download EasyMeta_UNZIP.zip from your email or Downloads.
2. On your computer, unzip it (right-click, Extract All).
3. Inside you will see plg_system_easymeta_1.0.0.zip and ReadMe.txt.

Step 2: Install in Joomla

1. Log in to the Joomla administrator.
2. Open System (left menu).
3. Click Install, then Extensions.
4. Click Upload Package File.
5. Choose plg_system_easymeta_1.0.0.zip (the inner zip, not the UNZIP wrapper).
6. Wait until you see a green success message.

If the message shows a code like PLG_SYSTEM_EASYMETA_INSTALL_SUCCESS, install this 1.0.0 zip again so language files are in place.

1. Open System > Plugins.
2. In the search box type Easy Meta and press Enter.
3. You should see System - Easy Meta.
4. The status icon should be a tick (enabled). The installer turns it on for you.
5. Click the name System - Easy Meta to open the settings.

Tip: if search does nothing, click the blue search button next to the box.

Do these five things once. Then most articles will share correctly.

1. Open System - Easy Meta (see the previous tab).
2. On the first tab, leave Enable Easy Meta and Overwrite existing social tags set to Yes.
3. Click the Images tab.
4. Click Fallback image and pick a picture from Media. A wide photo works well (about 1200 by 630 pixels).
5. Leave Generate 1200 by 630 JPEG on Yes if your server has GD.
6. Click Save (top toolbar).
7. Open System > Clear Cache and delete the cache.

That fallback picture is used when an article has no intro image of its own.

You can change the share card for one article without touching the plugin.

1. Open Content > Articles.
2. Open the article you want to share.
3. Click the Meta tab (next to Content, Schema, Publishing).
4. Type a Social title if you want a shorter title than the article title.
5. Type a Social description if you want different text than the meta description.
6. Pick a Social image if this article should use a special picture.
7. Look at the previews (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Google, and more). They update as you type.
8. Click Save.

Leave a box empty to use the normal article title, description, or image.

Facebook may still show an old picture until you scrape the URL in Facebook Sharing Debugger.

Inside System - Easy Meta you will see several tabs. You only need the first two on day one.

Plugin (first tab)

• Enable Easy Meta: Yes means tags are written.
• Overwrite existing social tags: Yes means extra Helix or template tags are removed so Facebook sees one title.
• Force HTTPS URLs: Yes only upgrades http to https when the site is already on SSL.
• Buttons at the top: Blog / News / Minimal / Visual fill typical settings. Click Save after a preset. Export JSON downloads your settings. Refresh audit counts articles missing pictures.

Open Graph

Templates for the share title and description. Tokens such as {title} and {sitename} are replaced automatically.

X, Facebook, Pinterest

Optional @handles, Facebook App ID, and Pinterest helpers. Leave empty if you do not have them.

Canonical and robots

Keep canonical on. Robots stay index, follow unless you have a reason to hide a page.

Schema

Leave Off unless you want Easy Meta to write JSON-LD. Joomla already has some schema.

Category rules and Menu rules

Optional. Use these later if a whole category should use a different default image or title suffix.

Conflict debug

Only for Super Users. Turns on a small Easy Meta badge on the public site so you can count tags. Leave this Off for visitors.

Open the Advanced tab.

Skip these components is a multiple list of every component installed on your site. You click names. You do not type commas.

1. Click the list.
2. Tick a component if Easy Meta should stay off on that component’s pages (for example a helpdesk or gallery that already writes its own tags).
3. Click outside the list, then Save.

Articles (com_content) should normally stay unselected so blog posts still get cards.

1. Open your article on the public site (or the demo at demo.joomlax.com/demo/utilities/easy-meta).
2. Right-click the page, choose View Page Source.
3. Press Ctrl+F and search for easymeta:begin.
4. You should see one og:title and one canonical link.

If you see two og:title lines, turn Overwrite on and move System - Easy Meta near the bottom of the plugin list (higher ordering number) so it runs last.

• I cannot find the plugin

  • System > Plugins. Search Easy Meta. If it is missing, install plg_system_easymeta_1.0.0.zip again.

• No easymeta:begin in View Source

  • Is the plugin enabled? Is the article published? Did you skip that component on the Advanced tab?

• Facebook shows the wrong picture

  • Set a fallback or article social image. Then use Facebook Sharing Debugger and click Scrape Again.

• Two og:title tags

  • Overwrite = Yes. Plugin order late. Clear cache.

• Plugin name shows as PLG_SYSTEM_EASYMETA

  • Reinstall the zip so language files copy correctly. Clear cache.

• Which Joomla versions?

  • Joomla 4, 5, and 6 with PHP 8.1 or later.

• What file do I install?

  • Unzip EasyMeta_UNZIP.zip, then install the inner plg_system_easymeta_1.0.0.zip.

• Is this Easy Share?

  • No. Easy Share is buttons on the page. Easy Meta is the card Facebook reads.
